'Dr. Dino' guilty on all counts

Couple could get more than 200 years

Nicole Lozare

Pensacola evangelist and tax protester Kent Hovind winked at his wife and gave her a reassuring smile as he was led away to jail.

Jo Hovind clutched the necktie he had been wearing. She kept her eyes on her husband until he was out of sight.

A 12-person jury deliberated for 2½ hours on Thursday before finding the couple guilty of all counts in their tax-fraud case.

Kent Hovind, founder of Creation Science Evangelism and Dinosaur Adventure Land in Pensacola, was found guilty of 58 counts, including failure to pay $845,000 in employee-related taxes. He faces a maximum of 288 years in prison.

Jo Hovind was charged and convicted in 44 of the counts involving evading bank-reporting requirements. She faces up to 225 years in prison but was allowed to remain free pending the couple's sentencing on Jan. 9.

Kent Hovind briefly held onto her arm as the verdict was read. Neither reacted at first. But minutes later, she held her face in her hands.

"Nobody likes to pay taxes," Assistant U.S. Attorney Michelle Heldmyer said in her closing argument. "But we do because it's the law, and he is not above the law."

The jury also granted the prosecution's request for the Hovinds to forfeit $430,400. That amount equals the value of the checks signed and cashed by Jo Hovind in the 44 counts.

U.S. District Judge Casey Rodgers released Jo Hovind until sentencing but denied Kent Hovind's request to be released. He most likely will be detained at either Escambia County Jail or Santa Rosa County Jail until sentencing.

Heldmyer said Kent Hovind was a flight risk and a "danger to the community."

His attorney, Alan Richey, argued that the Internal Revenue Service pursued his client because of his religious beliefs.

Kent Hovind, whose life's mission is to debunk evolution, says he and his employees are workers of God and therefore exempt from paying taxes. He pays his employees in cash and does not withhold their taxes or pay his share as an employer.

"There's a difference between wrong and committing a crime," Richey said in his closing argument. "You can do all the wrong things you want and still not commit a crime."

Jo Hovind's attorney, Jerold Barringer, argued that his client was a simple piano teacher and grandmother who was not aware of bank-reporting regulations concerning large amounts of cash. Any cash transaction at a bank more than $10,000 triggers a currency-transaction report forwarded to the IRS. She was found guilty of using several methods to take out just enough money to avoid triggering the report.

The Hovinds and their attorneys declined comment. Their supporters, who took up most of the six rows in Rodgers' courtroom, dwindled in number as the day went on.

Jo Hovind's son, Kent Andrew Hovind, and two women escorted her out of the U.S. District Courthouse in downtown Pensacola.

Richard Hogan, an acquaintance of Kent Hovind who observed the last day of the two-week trial, said he felt especially bad for Jo Hovind.

"He was the leader, and she probably went along with him," said Hogan, 53. He first met the Hovinds when their children were homeschooled.

"It's pretty tough to fight Goliath," Hogan said. "The first time the IRS calls, you should go ahead and deal with it. It didn't have to come down to this."

Pastor - Murderer

Ex-pastor held in 2004 murder
Warrant was waiting for La Grange man who was in Mexico

Last Updated: November 28, 2006, 05:28:46 AM PST

A former Hickman Community Church pastor has been arrested on a murder warrant linked to the death of an 85-year-old Hickman man in 2004.

Doug Porter was detained by federal authorities Monday afternoon at a border checkpoint near San Diego while trying to return to the United States from Mexico.

Stanislaus County authorities said they believe Porter, 55, intended to kill Frank Craig in a pair of auto crashes two years apart in order to inherit Craig's reportedly multimillion-dollar trust. Craig died in the second crash in April 2004.

Porter is in custody in San Diego. He will be handed over to Stanislaus County sheriff's deputies and returned to Modesto, said Vince Bond, a public information officer for U.S. Customs and Border Protection in San Ysidro.

Stanislaus County Superior Court Judge Donald Shaver signed the no-bail arrest warrant Wednesday. It includes charges of attempted murder, elder abuse and grand theft, Chief Deputy District Attorney John Goold said.

"It's just the culmination of a long investigation," Goold said. "We'll get into the courtroom and see how it plays out."

Longtime acquaintances from the Hickman area, Craig asked Porter in the late 1990s to help him build an ag-themed museum.

By all accounts a cantankerous character, Craig inherited stocks and real estate when his brother, J.C. Craig, died in San Mateo County in 1998. Frank Craig's other brother, N.J. Craig, said the trust might have contained as much as $4 million.

Frank Craig dreamed of building the museum in eastern Stanislaus County to showcase farm equipment he had acquired over decades. He turned to Porter when he couldn't find anyone to help him with the project. At the time, Porter was a well-known pastor who had built a large congregation at Hickman Commu-nity Church. He also had coached numerous state wrestling champions, including one of his sons, at Hughson High School.

Porter agreed to help Craig. Soon, he gained control of Craig's finances. In November 1999, Craig signed an amendment to his revocable trust. The changes excluded his two sisters as heirs, replacing them with Porter as the successor trustee and Hickman Community Church as the new heir.

Porter created a board to build the museum, naming to it, among others, Lonni Ashlock, who is to stand trial next year on charges of real estate fraud and grand theft. But Porter never broke ground on the museum. Craig, friends said, became frustrated and vocal about the lack of progress.

In March 2002, Porter and Craig were driving east on Lake Road in Porter's pickup when it veered off the road and struck an oak tree. Craig, the passenger, suffered broken legs and injuries to his pelvis, sternum and lungs.

He never walked again without assistance. Porter walked away with minor injuries.

On April 22, 2004, Craig was again the passenger and Porter the driver when Porter's pickup veered into the Turlock Irrigation District's Ceres Main canal, about 1½ miles west of Craig's ranch.

This time, Craig died. Again, Porter walked away.

Some of Craig's friends voiced their suspicions to authorities soon after the accident, and Stanislaus County sheriff's Detective Mark Copeland began to investigate.

Within days of Craig's death, Porter began removing items from Craig's home, Craig's friends said. Two months after Craig's death, Porter told The Bee that Craig "basically left everything in the trust to me, Doug Porter."

Eight months after the crash, Porter sold Craig's 17-acre ranch to a neighboring nursery for more than $400,000, according to Stanislaus County assessor's records.

Since Craig's death, investigators from the Sheriff's Department and district attorney's office have been trying to determine how much money Craig had and how much of it Porter spent.

"It took lots of time," Goold said. "First to get them (financial records) and then to go through them completely."

Porter used $469,000 of Craig's money to buy property for the church, including land where the museum was supposed to stand.

The complicated investigation took more than two years for a number of reasons. It began in the middle of the Scott Peterson case, which tied up many people at the district attorney's office. And in February, Copeland needed five heart bypasses, which took him out of commission for about four months.

Porter resigned from Hickman Community Church in November 2005 "to protect the church from further negative focus," according to an ad the church placed in The Bee. His son, Aaron, replaced him at the pulpit but resigned a few months ago.

Doug Porter's home at a sprawling family complex named Rivendell in La Grange — complete with a lake — is listed for sale at $895,000.

Doug Porter reportedly has been living part time in Mexico while building a new ministry. His wife, Vicki, remains a trustee on the Hughson Unified School District board.

Meanwhile, Craig's family received an undisclosed settlement from Porter's auto insurance provider. They filed a civil lawsuit against Porter in December 2004 contesting the trust. That case is working its way through the courts.

Serial Killer Priest

Tantingco: Magalang's serial-killer priest
By Robby Tantingco
Peanut Gallery

JUAN Severino Mallari, date and place of birth unknown but probably a native of Macabebe, was ordained priest in 1809 after completing his seminary studies at the University of Santo Tomas.

Not too many Kapampangans have heard of him but he has secured his place in history for three reasons: (1) he is the second Filipino calligraphic artist-priest, (2) the first Filipino priest executed by the Spanish colonial government, and (3) the celebrated serial killer of Magalang town.

The details of Juan Severino Mallari's life can be found in Dr. Luciano Santiago's book Kapampangan Pioneers in the Philippine Church 1592-2001, published by the Holy Angel University Center for Kapampangan Studies.

From the start, this gifted Kapampangan priest had bouts with mental instability brought about by his artistic genius, his mother's strange illness and the string of stressful episodes that most likely aggravated his depression.

In the late 1700s and early 1800s, a number of Filipino artists specialized in engraving and painting religious subjects. Two Kapampangan priests, Fr. Mariano Hipolito of Bacolor and Fr. Juan Severino Mallari, did calligraphic drawings, which have been preserved in the archives of the archdiocese of Manila; hence, they are known and recognized as the first and the second Filipino calligraphic artists-priests, respectively.

Calligraphic drawing is a folk art in which the artist draws figures to decorate the edges of a manuscript. This art form antedated the establishment of the country's first art academy, and was probably inspired by the illuminated manuscripts from Europe, except that the sketches were in black-and-white. (It was only much later when calligraphic drawing became more elaborate when it took the form of letras y figuras.)

Fr. Hipolito and Fr. Mallari took to calligraphic drawing to decorate their usually drab parish annual reports called planes de almas. They had contrasting styles: Fr. Hipolito often drew Spaniards in various poses like hunting, walking their pet or writing at their desk, while Fr. Mallari's favorite subjects were flowery vines and naked boy angels perched on swirling clouds.

Right after ordination in 1809, Fr. Mallari became coadjutor, in quick succession, of Gapang, Lubao and Bacolor. He applied to be pastor (parish priest) of Orani, and failed; then Mariveles, failed again; and Lubao, failed once more. Lastly he applied to be sacristan (chaplain) of the Port of Cavite, was again rejected. In 1812, he was finally and thankfully appointed pastor of San Bartolome Parish in Magalang, Pampanga. It was around this time that his mother was stricken with a strange illness; history does not record the nature of her illness, except to say that Fr. Mallari believed she "had been bewitched."

What happened next was the stuff of horror movies: over a period of over 10 years, a series of unexplained murders took place in the bucolic town of Magalang; again, history does not record the details of the murders, just the number of victims -- a total of 57 murders!

Considering the size of the town, it was mind-blowing how the killer could have escaped arrest (or even identification) for such a long period of time. But it was even more mind-blowing when the killer was finally arrested and identified: it was none other than the cura parroco himself, Fr. Juan Severino Mallari!

At the time of his arrest, Fr. Mallari had already fallen ill due to his psychosis and yet the Spanish authorities still hauled him off to Manila and imprisoned like a common criminal, instead of committing him to a mental institution.

According to historian Dr. Santiago, this was strange, because the Spaniards were the pioneers in the humane treatment of mental patients, having founded one of the first psychiatric hospitals in Europe, which they even named Hospital de Inocentes, to emphasize the innocence of mentally ill people who should not be held responsible for their actions.

At the time of Fr. Mallari's arrest in 1826, the Hospicio de San Jose had already been in existence for over 15 years; Fr. Mallari, Dr. Santiago (himself a psychiatrist) insists, should have been taken there instead of the prison.

But the Spanish authorities were probably too outraged by the heinous crimes to be bothered by human rights issues. An account by Spanish chronicler Sinibaldo de Mas, recorded in Blair & Robertson's The Philippine Islands series, says that "The attorney on that case talked in pathetic terms of the indescribable and barbarous prodigality of blood shed by that monster." The account mentioned Fr. Mallari's case as an example of the indios' natural tendency to actually believe the ghost stories they were so fond of telling, since Fr. Mallari claimed in his defense that he had murdered 57 of his parishioners "because he believed that he could by this means save his mother who, he persuaded himself, had been bewitched."

In 1840, after languishing in jail for 14 years, Fr. Juan Severino Mallari was executed by hanging --"clearly," Dr. Santiago writes, "a victim of injustice." His death earned him the title in history as the first Filipino priest executed by the Spanish colonial government, since the execution of the Gomburza (Fr. Gomez, Fr. Burgos, and Fr. Zamora) took place only 32 years later, in 1872.

More research needs to be done on this dark episode of Magalang history. Who were the victims? How were they killed? Do they have descendants still residing in Magalang today?

My brother-in-law (not for long ......)

My sister married a real jerk about 8 years ago. They are Xtians, well at least she seems to be. Let me tell you the sordid story ......

The JERK, named Michael had been married two times before, red flags for all my family, but my sister just said, "He’s changed, he's a Christian." So they have a cute kid together, who happens to be autistic, tough. I love the little guy, and he is really cool to be around.

Well Michael the jerk got laid off from his job, and found a new one at a Christian publishing house here in the northwest. Harvest House Publishers. So guess what they are all a happy little xtian family right? Well Michael started seeing one of the good little xtians there. I don't know the cunts name, but he started spending a lot of lunch time etc. He had only worked there at the Jesus factory for about two months.

Well guess what .... That wasn't good enough; he started staying the night over at her house "talking." Yeah right and pigs fly out of my butt. Next, he decided that he wanted to move in with the witch. So he left my sister all the bills, mortgage, utilities you name it, and my little autistic nephew to deal with.

Typical Jesus lover ......

So what did my sister do? File for divorce within a week. RIGHT ON SIS. Now we are getting temp rulings back from the judge........ He has to pay 1/2 the mortgage and $450 a month in child support. Guess who's crying a river. Michael the adulterer........ My sister even has a life insurance policy on him. I encouraged her to do it in her name, so that if they ever broke up she could keep paying on it and get the money when he dies.

Anyway, Michael, if you ever read this, why don't you just put a bullet in your head so sis can have some cash out.

Pastor is Charged with Sex Crimes

Former Parishioner Talks After Pastor is Charged with Sex Crimes
Dated: 11/22/2006 10:03:27 PM Updated: 11/23/2006 03:06:31 PM

Sex charges are filed against a Riverside pastor. Dennis Bowling was a pastor at Kingdom Harvest Church for 19-years. Now, he is in The Montgomery County Jail, facing eight counts of sexual battery. The charges stem from a case involving one victim, but prosecutors and a former parishioner say there are more out there.

Prosecutors say there are at least nine other victims that they're aware of. All are minors between the ages of 10 to 16.

Montgomery County Prosecutor, Mat Heck said, "We have allegations of sexual contact of intercourse as well as touching. Again this particular child is 15 years of age and the children range in age even younger than that."

Ray Norton, a former church member, says Bowling had issues with control. Norton said, "I describe him as somebody that didn't get proper teaching, and wouldn't submit himself to authority, but required everybody else to submit themselves to him."

Norton says victims need to speak up and contact authorities. He said, "Those who have been hurt need to come forward because you can't hide your pain. If you subdue it, it will just eat you alive before you're done."

Bowling is expected to be arraigned on Friday. If convicted on all counts, he faces up to 80 years in prison.

North Charleston minister already on sex offender registry

Tyrone Moore appears on South Carolina's sex offender registry.

On Sundays, he also appears behind the pulpit at a nondenominational North Charleston church.

Police on Tuesday arrested the senior pastor at Full Word Ministries on a new charge of second- degree criminal sexual conduct.

An arrest warrant affidavit accuses Moore, 39, of performing sex acts on a male parishioner in 2002 and 2003, when the parishioner was 17 years old. Moore's past criminal record includes a 1989 conviction for committing a lewd act on a child under 16 and a 1991 conviction for criminal sexual conduct with a minor between the ages of 11 and 14, according to State Law Enforcement Division records.

During a bond hearing Wednesday, much of the discussion centered around whether Moore would be able to return to preach.

"I think the state would be imposing on his religion if he's not allowed to come to his church," said attorney George Counts, who represented Moore during the hearing. "It's a church that he founded."

A victims advocate for North Charleston police, Lisa Bullard, countered by asking, "If he's allowed to return, what message does that send to the victim?"

"I really believe he is sick," the accuser said of Moore during the hearing. "He has done this before and I believe he'll do it again."

Charleston County Magistrate Patricia Baldwin set several conditions on Moore's $200,000 bail.

If he gets out of jail, he is not to be in the company of any children, including his own children, without another adult present. The judge barred him from any contact with the man who said he was abused.

This presented a dilemma. The accuser said he wanted to continue going to the church. Baldwin made him choose which of the two Sunday-morning services he would like to attend, and said Moore can only go to the other service.

The pastor's expression remained calm throughout the hearing, and he answered the judge's questions politely.

The attorney portrayed him as a family man with strong local ties and a dedication to his flock. Married, Moore has four children ages 4 to 16, Counts said. His wife and a woman identified as a family friend also attended.

"He's not a threat to the community," Counts said. "He's been here his entire life."

The victims advocate argued that Moore has been deceptive because he has two different addresses. The sex-offender registry lists one on Realm Street in North Charleston, yet an arrest warrant lists an address on Applebee Court in Goose Creek.

Counts said that he was only handling the bond hearing. Attorneys Carl Grant and Eduardo Curry will be taking over Moore's defense.

Full Word Ministries occupies a brick building at the corner of Gordon Street and Peacock Avenue in the Waylyn neighborhood. It sits directly across the street from the Garrett Academy of Technology.

North Charleston police arrested Moore at his church Tuesday. Their investigation began after the man who claimed to have suffered abuse spoke to a detective in January. Later, he mailed a letter to police detailing allegations of what was happening at the church.

Pastor to prison

Judge tells minister to 'get a handle' on problem
By Corky Emrick
Sturgis Journal
Published: Tuesday, November 21, 2006 10:14 PM CST

CENTREVILLE A chapter in the lives of two Sturgis girls was closed Tuesday when Steven Lynn Ruger was sentenced to 6 to 16 years in prison for sexually assaulting them.

St. Joseph County Circuit Court Judge Paul Stutesman handed down the sentence, following a plea agreement between Ruger and the St. Joseph County Prosecutor.

"This was a long and hard process for the victims," assistant prosecutor Holly Curtis said to a full courtroom. "This has forever scarred them.

"He still projects blame, he’s unwilling to admit full responsibility," Curtis said. "These girls didn’t ask for this. He’s a predator."

On Oct. 16, Ruger pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and the admittance of having a sexual relationship with a second girl.

Several other charges were dismissed, including four counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Also dropped were one count of first-degree CSC and two counts second degree CSC. Those charges came from a second victim.

During his chance to address the court on Tuesday, Ruger turned to the victims and their families and apologized.

As part of the sentencing report was a sex physiological study, which found Ruger to have a guarded prognosis, one of the lowest on the scale.

The study found Ruger as having a sexual addiction to pornography and having a problem between boundaries, or ages.

"You were a minister," Stutesman said. "You cause doubts in our own beliefs. Until you get a handle on your real problem, you’ll serve the full 16 (years), not six."

Ruger was credited with 94 days served.

Ruger was originally arrested by Sturgis Police on April 29 at his home. Police said that the day before, a 13-year-old girl told school officials she had been victimized earlier that week by Ruger, while under his care at the church.

Four days later he posted bond. Just hours after his release, he was arrested again by Sturgis Police at his Vicksburg home.

He and his family had moved there after he was hired for a similar position at a Portage church.

Ruger faced two additional charges of CSC first-degree. The sexual assaults were to have taken place 2002-03 when the victim was 14, when Ruger was pastor at the Church of Christ at 901 N. Lakeview Ave. in Sturgis.

Representing Ruger was Kalamazoo attorney Anastase Markou.

Youth Pastor Indicted Over Child Porn

POSTED: 10:32 pm EST November 21, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A federal grand jury has indicted a former Jacksonville youth pastor on two child pornography charges.

Authorities said 34-year old Richard Sweat turned himself in after being indicted following a year-long investigation.

Sweat worked at Lake Shore Baptist Church on Blanding Boulevard, investigators said.

No one from the church wanted to comment on Sweat's arrest, but they did tell Channel 4 that Sweat no longer worked at the church.

Sweat turned himself in to the FBI on Monday morning and went before a judge in federal court. Investigators said he possessed child pornography on the computer in his Orange Park home.

According to the federal indictment, Sweat had computer files with young boys engaging in sexually explicit behavior.

Investigators said they don't believe any children from Lake Shore Baptist Church were involved.

However, the case remains under investigation.

According to investigators, Sweat is expected to return to federal court in January.

Priest charged with possessing child porn

According to authorities, a Roosevelt priest had 1,300 sexually explicit images on his rectory computer and engaged in sexual chats with undercovers.

BY JOHN MORENO GONZALES
Newsday Staff Writer

November 17, 2006, 11:00 PM EST

Federal agents arrested a Roman Catholic priest based in Roosevelt Friday on child pornography charges after authorities said he stored 1,300 sexually explicit images of children on his rectory computer and engaged in sexually laced chats with detectives posing as teenage boys.

Thomas G. Saloy, 45, an administrator at the Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Church in Roosevelt, was arrested Friday morning after a yearlong investigation, authorities said, in which he used America Online screen names to talk to minors about sex and set up exchanges of child pornography with adults and youths.

Saloy made a "suicidal gesture" during his arrest, federal prosector Allen L. Bode said Friday during the bespectacled cleric's arraignment in U.S. District Court in Central Islip. Magistrate Michael L. Orenstein ordered Saloy confined to a psychological ward at Mercy Medical Center in Rockville Centre until Nov. 27. Orenstein cited a court agreement and said Saloy would then be transferred pending further proceedings to the St. Luke Institute in Silver Spring, Md., which has treated clerics for sexual disorders.

Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer, whose detectives aided the investigation, said: "A person in a position of trust in the community, a priest, is being charged with this crime. Parents must be ever vigilant to protect children from sexual predators."

At a regular Friday prayer group at the Roosevelt church, several parishioners were stunned by the arrest.

"I can't believe it," said Maria Martinez, 34, of Roosevelt. "You never know what someone is thinking inside."

Bode would not comment further on the suicide threat. Saloy's attorney, Peter Rubin of Rockville Centre, only said: "He tried to kill himself," adding that he didn't know how.

Saloy's mother, sister, and brother sat in the first row of the courtroom and left without commenting. The Diocese of Rockville Centre issued a news release a few hours after the arrest, stating that the priest had been placed on administrative leave in which he "may not wear clerical garb ... and may not celebrate Mass in public."

The written statement from diocese spokesman Sean P. Dolan on behalf of Bishop William Murphy urged the public to "please pray for healing during this most difficult time."

According to the Diocese of Rockville Centre directory of priests, Saloy was ordained in 1988 and has also been associate pastor at Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church in West Babylon, St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in East Islip, and the Parish of St. Raphael in East Meadow.

St. Raphael was where Matthew Maiello, a former youth director, worked when he pleaded guilty in July 2003 to raping and sodomizing four teens he supervised. Saloy served there, according to the directory, from 1988 to 1993.

According to the 8-page complaint against Saloy:

He used at least three AOL screen names to initiate illicit chats with boys he believed to be minors and to exchange child pornography.

Saloy was first implicated in September 2005 when FBI agents searched a Milwaukee residence during an investigation in pornography trading on AOL. They followed an online trail leading to the priest's computer.

During his arrest Saloy "admitted that he had a sexual interest in 15 to 16-year-old boys ... and that he occasionally received images of very young children, which he deleted."

A search of computer equipment at Saloy's rectory quarters revealed the 1,300 still images and video clips, which included depictions of children under 15, some pre-pubescent.

"Like so many others, this case shows that the Catholic church's sex abuse scandal is far from over," said David Clohessy, national director of St. Louis-based SNAP, the Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests.

If convicted, Saloy faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a lifetime of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

Pastor surrenders in teen-sex case

ARAPAHOE COUNTY - A high school pastor at Greenwood Community Church admitted to being sexually involved with a 16-year-old girl and surrendered to deputies Tuesday, investigators said.

Donald Richard Ryan, 33, said he had been counseling the teenager for the past 2 1/2 years, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.

Ryan allegedly told investigators that the two shared inappropriate telephone text messages and e-mails that led to sexual contact.

Ryan, of Highlands Ranch, was arrested for investigation of charges of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust and unlawful sexual contact. He could face up to 12 years in prison if convicted of the sexual assault charge.

Ryan was being held on $50,000 bail.

Greenwood Community Church, 5600 E. Belleview Ave., is part of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church.

Ryan confessed about the sexual relationship to church leaders Tuesday, said Bob Greene, the church's business administrator, in a written statement. The church then contacted police.

Ryan has been removed from the pastoral staff. He had been working at the church for the past two years, Greene said.

The teenage girl is "not too well," sheriff's Capt. Brice Moomaw said.

Anyone with information regarding Ryan is asked to call investigators at 303-795-4711.

Ryan is scheduled to appear in court Nov.

Catholic priest charged with forcible touching

BROCKPORT, N.Y. A 52-year-old Roman Catholic priest is accused of forcibly touching a female co-worker.

The Reverend Peter Enyan-Boadu was arrested and charged with three misdemeanor counts of harassment and one of forcible touching. He was arraigned before a Brockport village judge on Friday and released, to return to court on December 6th.

The Diocese of Rochester said in a statement that Enyan-Boadu requested and was granted a personal leave of absence until final disposition of the charges.

The charges accuse him of kissing a woman with whom he worked a few months ago.

Enyan-Boadu was ordained in his native Ghana in 1984 and came to Rochester in 1998. He has served as the pastor of the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Brockport since 1999.

Gay Christian Group Calls For Support Of Outed Pastor

(Austin, Texas) LGBT ecumenical group Soulforce is calling on gays to offer compassion to the Rev. Ted Haggard - the minister who despite a history of bashing gays from the pulpit was ousted by his superchurch when it was disclosed he had a longtime relationship with a hustler.

Soulforce wants gays to write letters of support and concern for Haggard.

"This is obviously a moment of personal, familial, and professional crisis for Rev. Haggard," said Soulforce spokesperson Paige Schilt.

Schlit said that Soulforce acknowledges that many in the gay community feel legitimate anger toward Haggard for his history of religion-based oppression.

Haggard is undergoing counseling by a group of evangelical pastors. The counseling is officially called "restoration" a code word for what the so-called ex-gay movement regards as sexual reassignment according to groups that track the movement.

"Haggard has now been referred to the same treatment that has threatened the mental and spiritual health of countless gay men and lesbians. We hope that many will see this as an opportunity to reach out in empathy," said Schlit.

"We want to make sure that the voices of intolerance and homophobia are not the only voices that he hears during this difficult time."

The American Psychological Association issued a stinging rebuke of the so-called ex-gay movement in August disputing its claims that homosexuality is a choice that can be cured.

"For over three decades the consensus of the mental health community has been that homosexuality is not an illness and therefore not in need of a cure," the statement said. "There is simply no sufficiently scientifically sound evidence that sexual orientation can be changed."

Haggard was fired from ministry of the 14,000 member church he built in Colorado Springs after the allegations about his trysts with a Denver male prostitute became public. A letter that was read to the congregation of the New Life Church in which Haggard acknowledged publicly his "sexual immorality". (story)

"There's a part of my life that is so repulsive and dark that I have been warring against it for all of my adult life," the letter said.

Haggard was also forced to resign as president of the National Association of Evangelicals, a position which had given him unbridled access to the White House.

Earlier this year more than two-dozen Soulforce members were arrested at demonstrations at colleges which do not admit gays.

Most recently the organization has been involved in protests of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", the ban on gays serving openly in the military.

Pastor pleads not guilty to rape, molestation

By Chris Collins / The Fresno Bee
11/15/06 03:48:22

A Fresno pastor accused of child molestation and rape pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Fresno County Superior Court.

Wearing a pin-striped suit, 36-year-old Bishop Charles Dickerson showed little emotion as he appeared briefly in front of a judge for his arraignment.

He later declined to comment.

Prosecutors say Dickerson, who leads Pearly Grove Baptist Church in southwest Fresno, faces four counts of lewd and lascivious acts against a minor, three counts of forcible rape and a count of lewd and lascivious acts with a minor 14 or 15 years old.

Dickerson's attorney, Glenn LoStracco, said the charges are a result of rumors generated by church politics and a messy separation Dickerson is going through with his wife.

"Life is very difficult for him," LoStracco said. "He's being very strong and continuing with his ministry."

Fresno police Lt. Dave Belluomini said a warrant for Dickerson's arrest was obtained Oct. 3 as a result of a police investigation that started June 26. He said he could not release details about the case or about the alleged victim or victims.

Dickerson was arrested in Seattle on Oct. 16 and extradited to Fresno two weeks later.

LoStracco said rumors Dickerson had fled north to escape arrest were untrue. He said the pastor was spending time in the Northwest attending a religious conference.

Dickerson was released on $400,000 bail and has returned to preaching at his church.

"When you're on a pulpit in front of a congregation, you're not hiding," LoStracco said.

Dickerson likely will face a preliminary hearing in January. A judge will then decide if his case should go to trial.

Sure he didn't do it.

Pastor sentenced for sexually assaulting parishioner

Former pastor sentenced for sexually assaulting parishioner
James Michael Holthus to serve one year in jail

By Dan Nienaber
The Free Press

MANKATO —

A controversial court case that has divided two churches came to an end Monday when a former Lutheran pastor was sentenced for sexually assaulting a parishioner.

“My hope is, now that this matter is taken care of, the healing can begin,” Blue Earth County District Court Judge Kurt Johnson said. “I hope people can move on because that’s what needs to be done.”

Then he placed James Michael Holthus, 52, on probation for up to 10 years with the condition Holthus serve one year in jail, pay a $6,000 fine, pay $6,219 in restitution, complete sex offender treatment and register as a predatory offender. Any money Holthus spends on treatment can be deducted from his fine.

A 21-month prison sentence also was imposed and stayed, meaning Holthus could be sent to prison if he doesn’t meet his probation requirements. It was the harshest sentence he could have received without departing from Minnesota sentencing guidelines, Johnson said.

More than 50 people packed into the courtroom to witness the sentencing hearing.

Holthus pleaded guilty to a felony charge of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct in August. He admitted to sexually touching a man from his church to whom he was also providing religious advice. Holthus was serving as a pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake Crystal and St. John Lutheran Church in Rapidan when the assault occurred.

When Holthus was arrested Nov. 8, 2005, he was charged with more serious crimes including first-degree criminal sexual conduct. The criminal complaint that was filed accused him of sexually touching the same victim many times over several years, starting when the victim was about 14 years old.

In a written statement read by someone else during the hearing, the victim said he didn’t realize when he was still a child that he was being manipulated by Holthus. He said he stayed alone in motel rooms with Holthus “multiple times” and was bothered when Holthus always asked for rooms with one bed. When rooms with two beds were all that was available, Holthus would “end up in my bed anyhow,” the victim said.

He told investigators Holthus would sexually touch him during those overnight trips.

“I came to dread motels because I knew what would happen,” the victim said. “I want the whole world to know that James Holthus is a pedophile. I know, if given the opportunity, he’ll strike again.”

The victim’s mother also made a statement in court. She said she blamed herself for what happened to her son because she didn’t act earlier when noticing suspicious behavior. She listed several incidents where she wished she would have called police, including times when she found Holthus sitting outside her house at night and when he told her about sexually charged incidents involving her son.

She also asked Johnson to go easy on her former pastor.

“As a Christian, I’m asking for leniency,” she said. “My family won’t understand this. However, our children have to be protected.”

Seven people gave statements on behalf of Holthus, including several men who were former students of his when he was a teacher at a small rural Lutheran school outside of Lakefield in southwestern Minnesota. The school closed more than a decade ago.

The former students said they had good memories of Holthus bringing them on trips. Two of those men also said they spent the night at his house alone with him, and one said they shared the same bed.

Christian principal arrested

Principal arrested for molesting and exposing himself to student in Citrus County
By: Valerie Boey

Beverly Hills, Florida -- According to deputies, former principal Derek Vanderheyden is accused of molesting and exposing himself to one of his students.

Citrus County sheriff's spokesperson Gail Tierney says it happened on several occasions, “She's a 15-year-old girl and he's a 38-year-old man and given the relationship between school and students this obviously is a criminal offense.”

Tierney says the incidents happened over several months off the property of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and School, “Our victim did spend time at his home and one of the incidents happened on the way home from the airport when he had picked her up to come back here to Citrus County.”

According to deputies the victim now lives in Wisconsin. She told authorities there what happened. Vanderheyden then resigned from the school on November 3rd and turned himself into authorities on the 8th.

Tierney says, Vanderheyden confirmed what the victim told them.

He's been principal for the last 5-years, “He was certainly close to and involved with children for the years he spent at that school and so the concern is that there may be additional victims.”

Pastor Mark Gabb released a written statement, “We at St. Paul's Lutheran Church and School are currently working with law enforcement to investigate allegations against our former staff member Mr. Derek Vanderheyden."

The school has around 55 children in pre-k through eighth grade, ”As pastor at St. Paul's I continue to pray for everyone involved in this matter and make myself available to our church and school families in whatever way I can.”

The pastor says this is a matter that needs to be resolved in court. Derek Vanderheyden bonded out of jail. We tried contacting Vanderheyden, but he didn't return our call.

HAGGARD SEX SCANDAL

HAGGARD RESIGNS OVER CHARGES HE PAID FOR GAY SEX, ADMITS BUYING METH: EVANGELICAL SCANDAL COULD IMPACT TUESDAY ELECTIONS

Web Posted: November 5, 2006

In a major scandal with possible consequences for the upcoming national election, Rev. Ted Haggard of the National Association of Evangelicals has resigned his position as president of the group over charges that he paid a Denver man for sex during the past three years.

The story broke on Wednesday when Mike Jones, 49, of Denver gave reporters details of his alleged liaisons with Pastor Haggard, and said that he had voicemails from the prominent televangelist as well as an envelope he said the preacher used to mail him cash for sexual services. Jones added that he advertised as a male escort on the internet, and was contacted by man calling himself Art.

Haggard has resigned his NAE post, and taken administrative leave from his 14,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs.

As head of the National Association of Evangelicals, Haggard represented over 46,000 congregations throughout the country and enjoyed access to key Republicans and even the White House. New Life Church is one of the largest "mega-churches" in the nation.

Haggard is considered one of the powerful evangelical leaders in the country, and according to many observers played an instrumental role in the re-election of President Bush in 2004. He also reportedly talked to Bush in person or by phone on a weekly basis.

On Friday, stories in the Washington Post, Denver Post and other media outlets added more details to the widening scandal.

Jones said that his affair with Art -- coincidentally, Haggard's middle name -- lasted approximately three years and included monthly encounters. "There was no emotion involved," Jones told reporters. He said that when Art inquired about obtaining methamphetamine, he helped him purchase the illegal substance from a third party. Haggard, he said, used the drug "every time he visited me."

Haggard initially denied all charges, and on Wednesday told a Denver television station, "I did not have a homosexual relationship ... I am steady with my wife. I'm faithful to my wife."

When cornered by reporters on Thursday, though, Haggard confessed that he bought meth from a male prostitute, who he claimed he was referred to for a massage. "I bought it for myself but never used it," Haggard insisted. "I was tempted but I never used it."

Mr. Jones said that he learned Haggard's real name about six months ago while viewing a television program on the History Channel dealing with the apocalypse. Haggard was interviewed. This prompted Jones to investigate the popular preacher -- described by Time Magazine as one of the nation's 25 most influential evangelicals.

Jones said that when he discovered the position Haggard's church took on the issue of homosexuality and same-sex marriage, "I started getting really pissed."

Adding to the scandal has been a report from KUSA-TV which hired a voice identification expert from the University of Colorado to compare the voice messages left on Jones' answering machine with sample of Rev. Haggard's voice. On Friday, Associated Press reported that nine of 12 words were "perfect matches."

The Haggard scandal has fueled speculation within Colorado gay community. So far, no one has stepped forward with reports of earlier rumors about Haggard's alleged homosexuality. Mr. Jones, however, admitted that the story had political overtones, and told KUSA "He (Haggard) is being the hammer, and the gay movement is his nail."

There are also questions of how the scandal may impact Tuesday's elections. In 2004, the Republican strategy designed by White House political advisor Karl Rove included turning out large numbers of Christian evangelicals to vote on gay rights ballot referendums, including the issue of same sex marriage. Pundits say the tactic may not work on Tuesday, since most voters are focusing on more substantive issues including the war in Iraq. In Colorado, there are two major issues on the ballot dealing with gay rights. Amendment 43 would define marriage as a relationship involving a man and a woman. Referendum 1 would provide same-sex couples with more legal rights.

We have a new friend!

He has been with us for about three weeks, and he is a hot 28 year old guy. Lots of fun in bed, and a great personality. What more could you ask for?

I love how gays can have three ways without all the straight hang ups. YUM!

November 9, 2006

By Vickie Welborn
vwelborn@gannett.com

MANSFIELD – The pastor of a Stanley church, accused of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl has been indicted in connection with the rape today pleaded not guilty in DeSoto District Court.

Burchum Paul Warren, 50, pastor of South Oak Grove Assembly of God Church, appeared before District Judge Robert Burgess

Warren, who is free on a $50,000 bond, is represented by Shreveport attorney Rick Fayard.

Warren’s case has been allotted to Burgess’ division. A pretrial conference is set for Jan. 10 and his trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 22.

Last month, a DeSoto grand jury indicted Warren on a charge of aggravated rape for allegedly sexually assaulting the girl – a relative and church member – over six months this year.

Warren’s laptop computer was seized as a part of an investigation that began after the girl reported the alleged abuse to a schoolteacher. The computer contained adult pornography, but none of the images were illegal, authorities have said.

ALRIGHT!

Fair minded people have been elected majority in the House..... Great day for America. Now the Senate, only Montana and Virginia are in the balance with it looking good in both states for Senators that have a brain and are not controlled by the religious right wing!

Even if we get a 50/50 split in the Senate, it will be almost impossible for the hate mongers to pass hatred legislation. And of course there is the veto majority to keep that moron Bush in check.

Finally there may be an end to Iraq! Time to celebrate boys and girls, maybe there is a god after all.

Time to consider IMPEACHMENT of that constitution hating Bush! Wouldn't that be great? I can tell you this is a great morning for America.

A note from Howard Dean

Today most people will simply vote and go home.

That's not enough. Whether you're voting today or you've voted early or absentee already, what you do today could determine the outcome of this election The power is in your hands -- by getting as many people to vote as you can, you'll bring a change to our country and end Republican rule.

The conversations you have today, the extra few minutes you take to bring someone who might not otherwise vote with you to the polls, the follow-up with your friends, family and neighbors to make sure they have voted -- all of it will multiply the power of your single vote.

To help you get to the polls -- and to help you get others to the polls you can find your states polling information online:

http://www.democrats.org/pollingplace

We've also put together the resources you need to spread the Democratic message and reach as many people as possible. Here are just a few a couple of those resources:

Last-Minute Volunteers

The best way to volunteer at the last minute is to call your local Democratic Party: http://www.democrats.org/volunteer/call

Print Your Own Flyers

The Democratic Agenda: http://www.democrats.org/agenda
Voter Protection Info: http://www.democrats.org/voterprotection

There's another thing I want you to be aware of as your and your neighbors head to the polls today.

There have already been widespread reports of voter suppression by Republican operatives, ranging from apparently legal harassment of Democratic voters to potentially illegal efforts to keep voters away from the voting booth.

This isn't new for Republicans. It's a cynical art that the Republican machine has refined for years, and each election brings new variations on oldtactics that target minorities and minority-heavy areas.

Here's what you need to know:

1) If you're a registered voter, do not leave your polling location without voting. Every registered voter is entitled to cast a provisional ballot.

2) If you're in line before the poll's closing time, you are entitled to vote.

3) You're entitled to view a sample ballot at the polling place before voting.

4) If you experience any problems voting or observe any irregularities, immediately call 1-888-DEM-VOTE to report the incident. In addition to providing your polling place information, by calling 1-888-DEM-VOTE you can record a complaint or speak with an election protection monitor. The line is available in English and Spanish.

You can also report any voting irregularities or problems online:

http://www.democrats.org/voterprotection/report

Democrats are committed to ensuring that every rightful voter has the freedom to cast his or her ballot free from intimidation or undue burden, and we've deployed voter protection teams across the country to make sure that's possible today.

There's one more thing I want to tell you.

Today is not the end of anything. All the Democrats we elect, from city council to Congress to governor, will still have a lot of work to do after they take the oath of office in January.

And so will we, the committed Democrats who have promised to build a new kind of political party that doesn't evaporate after each election.

For the first time in our party's history, we're prepared to take the investments we made to win an election and turn them into permanent investments in our party.

We've spent millions of dollars and hundreds of thousands of volunteer hours to turn a year and a half of work on our 50-state strategy into an unprecedented 50-State Turnout operation.

We've seen in the last few weeks the dramatic impact we can have when we fight in places the Republicans take for granted. We've made a demonstrable difference in this election and laid the groundwork for future gains in even the most "red" parts of the country. When the final results are in, we'll report to you on the impact it's impact.

But right now you still have the opportunity to do something about this election.

Please take that opportunity while you can.

Thank you.

Governor Howard Dean, M.D.

P.S. -- If anyone who hasn't been paying attention to this election until today asks you what Democrats stand for, point them right here: http://www.democrats.org/agenda

Just a note

Well sorry there has been little posting here. We have a friend over, and well we have been busy. Hope you all are doing well.

It has been raining non-stop for the last week here in beautiful Eugene, and the leaves are really falling. Very messy, and hard to keep up with. I made the mistake of letting our gardener go during the summer, and well this time of year everyone seems to be too busy to replace them. :)

Police Stun Gun Kills Teen With Bible

Oct 31 8:42 AM US/Eastern

A teenager carrying a Bible and shouting "I want Jesus" was shot twice with a police stun gun and later died at a St. Louis hospital, authorities said.

In a statement obtained Tuesday by The Associated Press, police in Jerseyville, about 40 miles north of St. Louis, said 17-year-old Roger Holyfield would not acknowledge officers who approached him and he continued yelling, "I want Jesus."

Police tried to calm the teen, but Holyfield became combative, according to the statement. Officers fired the stun gun at him after he ignored their warnings, then fired again when he continued struggling, police said.

Holyfield was flown to St. Louis' Cardinal Glennon Hospital after the confrontation Saturday; he died there Sunday, police said.

An autopsy was planned for Tuesday.
