road rage pastor

COLLIER COUNTY: Christopher Thompson, a youth pastor in Collier County, faces felony charges Sunday morning following a road rage report.

According to Collier County deputies, Thompson pulled out a gun and pointed it at a man and his 20 month old daughter.

The incident happened Saturday night on Logan Boulevard after the victim cut Thompson off.

Thompson admits to having the gun in his van, but denies ever pulling it out and displaying the weapon.

Residents in the area said that they have seen a lot of problems along Logan Boulevard.

"I don't think it's an excuse to pull a gun especially with children in the car, there's no excuse," said resident Elise Oliveri.

Thompson was arrested and is being charged with aggravated assault with deadly weapon and displaying a firearm during a felony.

Letter from Paul Newman

Dear Mark,

It was one of my life's proudest achievements.

More than the films, more than the awards - finding out that I was on Nixon's Enemies List meant that I was doing something right.

Nixon didn't like my campaigning for Democratic presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy. But then again, he didn't much care for debate, dissent, or the Constitution either.

I was proud to stand with Democrats against an imperial president back then. And I am proud now to stand with a new generation of Democrats against a president who poses what I believe to be the biggest internal threat to American democracy in my lifetime.

That's why, when I was asked to send this message on behalf of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), I quickly agreed. A Democratic Senate is the best defense against this administration. I am as frustrated as all of you that Congress hasn't made more progress on issues we care about here in 2007. But I also know that Democrats only have a 51-49 majority in the Senate - and that Republicans with threats of filibusters and vetoes have tried to block just about everything.

We've got to preserve and strengthen our Senate majority in 2008, and the best way to do that is by supporting the DSCC. No other Democratic Party organization - not even the DNC - is focused exclusively on electing Democrats to the Senate.

The DSCC is only $134,979 away from their crucial third quarter fundraising goal, and they need you to get there by midnight tomorrow. Give today and a group of Democratic senators will triple your donation.

Click here to make a contribution of $50, $75 or more to make sure Democrats keep control of the United States Senate. Give before midnight on Sunday and a group of Democratic senators will triple your contribution.

You can take your pick of issues where Republicans are seriously damaging this country: Iraq, global warming, civil liberties. But I resent them most for how they've destroyed the American spirit by using xenophobia and fear to hold onto power.

It's scare-mongering pure and simple, and it is the only thing Republicans have left to offer.

We need to preserve and expand the slim 51-49 Democratic majority in the Senate, and we need to do the hard work to make it happen now.

Click here to make a contribution of $50, $75 or more to make sure Democrats keep control of the United States Senate. Give before midnight on Sunday and a group of Democratic senators will triple your contribution.

One seat is all that separates Republicans from retaking the United States Senate. That's why the 2008 elections are so pivotal.

The DSCC needs to raise $134,979 by midnight tomorrow. I'm more than happy to help. I hope you'll join me.

After all, the Senate hangs in the balance, with only one seat making all the difference.

Let's do our best to keep it in Democratic hands.

Sincerely,

Paul Newman

VIRGINIA BEACH - Police arrested a local pastor at his home on Wednesday after a Virginia Beach grand jury indicted him on three counts of embezzlement.

Pastor Kenneth Leigh Montgomery, 43, is accused of embezzling $125,723 from his Praise 3 Ministries between August 2004 and October 2006. The church, located on First Colonial Road, has since been renamed Hilltop Community Church.

Police spokesman Jimmy Barnes said the department's investigation found that Montgomery also received money from the church for items reported stolen in two burglaries at the church.

Montgomery is being held without bond in the Virginia Beach Correctional Center.

Former Husband of Teen Bride Charged with Rape

The former husband of the woman forced into marriage at the age of 14 by polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs has been charged with rape.

Steed implicated himself in testimony while trying to help the Jeffs case. In an unusual move, the Utah District Court on Wednesday made all of the evidence used in the Jeffs trial accessible online. The evidence gives some insight into the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints church and its followers.

Twenty-six-year-old Allen Steed is accused of having sex with 14-year-old Elissa Wall between April 2001 and September 2004. Wall is now 21 years old and left Steed as well as the FLDS church more than three years after her marriage to Steed.

Jeffs was convicted by a Utah jury on two counts of rape by an accomplice for forcing the girl to marry her then 19-year-old cousin, Allen Steed.

Evidence presented in court showed how Jeffs gave home economics lessons to the young girls telling them how to act when married, including saying that they belong to their husband and must obey him.

"He's been portrayed as a man who is just a religious leader trying to do his job and guide people in a kind and benevolent way, that is nonsense," said Richard Holm, a former FLDS member.

Holm was kicked out of the FLDS after questioning Jeffs. Holm's wife and children are still living in that community. He believes the release of the evidence from the trial will allow others to see what goes on in the tight-knit religious community.

Utah District Attorney Brock Belnap says they are investigating more cases.

"We have other work to do. We have more cases pending," said Brock Belnap, Utah district attorney, who did not want to elaborate further.

Sexual abuse: Pastor arrested

THRISSUR: Peechi police on Saturday arrested pastor K J Sebastian, 45, following a complaint by a 40- year-old widow hailing from Nadathara, alleging sexual harassment.

Police said that the pastor had enticed the women by offering his help to secure a loan from a bank at Alathur in Palakkad district. When the woman met the pastor at Alathur on December 23, 2006, he took her in his car to a lodge and subjected her to sexual harassment. The woman in her complaint stated that she was subjected to sexual harassment on many occasions later.

Police said that he would be produced before the First Class Judicial Magistrate.

the ten commadments

There are many Christians and Jews who demand that the Ten Commandments should be displayed in public institutions. In my opinion it is only fair that if the commandments are to be displayed, so should the penalties for breaking those commandments. Matter of fact they should be posted in its entirety so that society can see just what kind of crap these religions are feeding us. I also encourage those of you Judeo/Christians who visit here to print out this very list and post it where your children can see it. It’s time you explain to them what a murderous, unjust god you brainwash them into worshiping.

1st. Commandment, Exodus 20:3 “Thou shalt have no other gods before me”. Old Testament punishment - Deuteronomy 17:1-5 “And hath gone and served other gods, and worshipped them, either the sun, or moon, or any of the host of heavens, which I have not commanded. Then shalt thou bring forth that man or that woman, which have committed that wicked thing and shalt stone them with stones, till they die”. Deuteronomy 13:6-10, “If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is of thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. Thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the Lord thy God." Exodus 22:20 “He that sacrificeth unto any god, save unto the Lord only, he shall be utterly destroyed”. New Testament punishment - Mark 16:16 “He that believeth not, shall be damned”.

2nd. Commandment, Exodus 20:4 “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water below.” Old Testament punishment- Deuteronomy 27: 1 5 “Cursed be the man that maketh any graven or molten image.” That’s right kids don’t EVER draw, sculpt or paint or else god will curse you. Wanna be an artist, a photographer, take a picture of yourself or family? TOO BAD, God says no! You better drop out of art class before he smites you with boils.

3rd. Commandment, Exodus 20:7 “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain”. Old Testament punishment - Leviticus 24:16 “And he that blasphemeth the name of the Lord, he shall surely be put to death”, New Testament punishment - Matthew 12:32 “Whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come”. Mark 3:29 - “He that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgivness, but is in danger of eternal damnation”.

4th. Commandment, Exodus 20:8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy”. Old Testament punishment - Exodus 31:15 “Whosoever shall work in the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death”. Numbers 15:32. “And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the Sabbath day…And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the Lord commanded Moses.”

5th. Commandment, Exodus 20:12 “Honour thy father and thy mother”. Old Testament punishment - Exodus 21:15-17 “And he that smiteth his father, or his mother, shall be surely put to death”. More punishment - Exodus 21:17 “And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death”.

6th. Commandment, Exodus 20:13 “Thou shalt not kill”. Strangely enough this is a commandment despite all the punishments that require death in the New Testament and the Old Testament. How can thou not kill when thou is commanded to kill at the same time? This hypocrisy should be pointed out if the ten commandments are posted in schools, court rooms and buildings of legislation. The confusion of this commandment would surely bring capitol punishment into question.

7th. Commandment, Exodus 20:14 “Thou shalt not commit adultery”. Old Testament punishment - Leviticus 20:10 “And the man that committeth adultery with another man’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall be put to death”.

I am working on compiling the list of punishments for commandments 8, 9, and 10. They should be up by then. In the mean while I have several other random commands by god that are quite interesting which I have listed here. The following command is very relevant for it requires a mandatory belief in the biblical god. Following the Ten Commandments, which are also listed in Deuteronomy 5:7-21, there are a number of curses which shall come upon thee, and overtake thee. These curses are given in Deuteronomy 28:17-68. Space does not permit all of them to be quoted, but a few are that the Lord will smite thee with consumption, fever, hemorrhoids, scab, madness, blindness, boils, and many more even worse.

For those of you Christians who disregard the Old Testament (even though Christ said it was forever binding), I have gathered together a great law from the New Testament. Romans 1 :29-32 “Those filled with unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers, backbiters, hate for god, despite, proud, boasters, inventions of evil things, disobedience to parents, without understanding, covenant breakers, unnatural affection, implacable or unmerciful nature: Who knowing the judgment of God, that they which commit such things are worthy of death”.

Now I have had the displeasure of meeting many a Christian and I have one to meet as of yet, whom according to this list, are NOT worthy of death. How many of us feel envy, wish to fornicate, boast or gossip? How many Christians are guilty of debating? Why every day some Christian is debating the word of god or his dogmas with me. Every day I am the victim of deceit and despite at the hands of some Christian verbally harassing me for my beliefs. No wonder why god said that there shall only be 144,000 in the heaven out of all his followers.

In Conclusion:

Christians and Jews should post the commandments up in their parochial schools and in their churches/temples. But, if they insist on doing so they should print out this very page and hang it up for all to see. Don’t be a half-ass religionist; educate your children on what God truly commands. Stop thriving on telling half truths about your Bible/Pentateuch and publish the WHOLE story. Most importantly, do not think you have the right to post them in public institutions. It is MY job to educate MY child. Children need to learn the true meaning of love, compassion, morality, forgiveness and mercy. Not the filthy dogmas your Jehovah commands. Quite frankly, in comparison to hell-fire and damnation I’ll stick with Big Bird.

Youth leader professes innocence

The former executive director of the Oak Harbor Boys and Girls Club is accused of inappropriately touching a teenaged girl, Oak Harbor police say.

Police arrested and charged Roosevelt Rumble, 47, of Oak Harbor in Oak Harbor Municipal Court Sept. 13 with fourth degree assault with sexual motivation, a gross misdemeanor charge.

Rumble’s attorney, Terry Smith of Oak Harbor, said his client “vehemently denies the charges.”

“Mr. Rumble would like to say that he has worked with youth for 24 years,” Smith said. “He has been an outstanding member of our community. He asked that he not be tried in the court of public opinion. He vehemently denies these charges. He will enter a not guilty plea and put his trust in the American legal system, and above all, in the Lord.”

Detective Carl Seim said Rumble is accused of assaulting the girl more than one time. The girl is now 17 years old, but the alleged assaults occurred when she was 16, Seim said.

Rumble resigned from the Boys and Girls Club last year to become the pastor at the New Life Missionary Baptist Church. Rumble is no longer employed at the church.

Rumble has long been an advocate for children in the community. He started volunteering in 1996 with the Partnership with Youth, which later became the Boys and Girls Club. He helped organize events and was eventually named to the group’s board.

Then, in 1999, Rumble took the position of director. Prior to that, he enjoyed a career in the Navy.

Federal prosecutor is arrested in sex sting

Federal prosecutor is arrested in sex sting
Police say he solicited sex with Michigan 5-year-old

September 18, 2007

BY CHRISTY ARBOSCELLO

FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

A federal prosecutor flew to metro Detroit with a Dora the Explorer doll, hoop earrings and petroleum jelly for a 5-year-old he planned to have sex with, police say.

John David Roy Atchison -- who prosecutes civil and criminal matters as an assistant U.S. attorney in the Northern Florida District -- appeared on the other side of the law Monday in Detroit federal court. Atchison, 53, of Gulf Breeze, Fla., was charged with enticement of a minor using the Internet and knowingly traveling interstate to engage in illicit sex.

Atchison described himself as "very much a family man." He initiated the online chat Aug. 29 with the officer posing as a mother interested in letting men have sex with her children.

During continuous conversations, he expressed a desire to engage in oral, vaginal and anal sex with her fictitious daughter. Money was not part of the discussion.

In the chats, he also suggested he previously had sex with minors.

With eyes cast downward and fiddling with papers, Atchison asked for a court-appointed attorney Monday until he obtains his own. He was ordered to remain in custody, pending a detention hearing at 1 p.m. today. He faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted of the crimes.

Atchison, who is married and has children, boarded a Continental flight that left Pensacola, Fla., at 9:10 a.m. Sunday with a layover in Houston. He then changed planes, leaving Texas for Detroit Metro Airport and arriving at 4:52 p.m., where he was taken into custody without incident about eight minutes later.

Atchison's arrest was part of an undercover sex sting on behalf of the FBI Macomb Office and the Macomb County Sheriff's Office collaborating in the Macomb Area Computer Enforcement Team, also known as M.A.C.E.

"Nothing surprises us anymore," Sheriff Mark Hackel said Monday.

Besides working for the government in the Pensacola office, Atchison also serves as the president of the Gulf Breeze Sports Association, which includes youth athletics such as soccer and T-ball. Messages left at Atchison's home were not returned Monday. A person who answered the phone at the association said the board probably would release a statement today.

Dixie Morrow of the U.S. Attorney's Office, Northern Florida District, said she would not comment on the arrest or Atchison's professional background.

M.A.C.E. began cracking down on Internet crime six years ago. Soon after, officers became desensitized to the language predators use, Hackel said. Now they're almost unfazed when they discover prominent community figures are behind the perverse exchanges, he said.

"We don't care who they are. It doesn't matter," Hackel said, adding his team will track down the criminals regardless of their position.

Earlier this year, in separate incidents, a paramedic and a zoo consultant traveled from California to Macomb County and were nabbed in the same type of sex sting. And last year, the Orlando Sentinel reported that another Florida prosecutor, who worked in Rockwall County, killed himself after police said he was caught soliciting sex with a minor.

Pastor kills wife

Less than a week before Kari Lynn Baker’s death, she found crushed pills in her husband’s briefcase and confided to a friend that she thought Matt Baker was trying to kill her, the close friend said Friday.

“She was kind of panicked about the whole situation when she found those crushed pills. No. Really, she was a lot panicked,” Shae Dickey, who taught with Kari Baker at Spring Valley Elementary School in Hewitt, told the Tribune-Herald. “She suspected that he was having an affair, and she told me she thought he was trying to kill her.”

Those fears are included in the affidavit filed locally Friday to support Matt Baker’s arrest. By sundown, the 36-year-old former Central Texas pastor had turned himself in to authorities at the Kerr County Jail.

Since Kari Baker’s death April 8, 2006, — initially ruled suicide by overdose — Dickey says she has replayed her conversation with Kari many times in her head, including her friend’s worries concerning her husband.

“And every time I play it back, I wish I would have done something differently,” Dickey said. “I wish I would have told someone.”

Dickey said Friday she wasn’t surprised to learn that Hewitt police investigator Ben Toombs and Texas Ranger Matt Cawthon had obtained a warrant for Matt Baker’s arrest, charging him with murdering Kari Baker, the 31-year-old mother of his two daughters, and making it appear as though she killed herself with a lethal cocktail of sleeping pills and alcohol.

Like others who knew her, Dickey said she never believed Kari Baker killed herself.

Matt Baker, former pastor of the 75-member Crossroads Baptist Church near Lorena and former chaplain at the Waco Center for Youth, has since moved with his two girls to Kerrville, where his parents live. He has been working as a substitute teacher and a church youth minister, officials say.

Baker surrendered himself at the Kerr County Jail at 4:20 p.m. Authorities will bring Baker back to McLennan County Jail, where bond will be set. His daughters remain with his parents in Kerr County, officials said.

The arrest warrant affidavit Toombs filed alleges that Matt Baker used an over-the-counter sleep medication and alcohol on his wife to “render her defenseless,” then used a pillow or another object to suffocate her.

Baker’s attorneys, Gerald Villarrial and James Rainey, said they advised Baker to turn himself in at the Kerr County Jail.

“We can’t make any comment because we don’t know anything right now,” Rainey said Friday afternoon before Baker’s arrest. “We are just going to have to wait until after they arrest our client to find out what happened and then determine the next course of action.”

Keeping steady pressure

Kari Baker’s parents, Linda and James Dulin, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Baker in July 2006, alleging he killed her and made her death appear to be a suicide. They have kept steady pressure on Hewitt police officials to keep investigating their daughter’s death and elicited the help of the Texas Rangers in their quest.

“My husband and I have been waiting for this day for a year and a half,” Linda Dulin said. “We always believed that we would see this happen. We owe a great deal of gratitude to Texas Ranger Matt Cawthon. This guy makes Chuck Norris look like a wimp. I truly think this is a man of honor and courage, and he truly moved a couple of mountains to make this happen.”

She declined comment when asked about the efforts of Hewitt Police Department investigators, with whom Justice of the Peace Billy Martin conferred before declaring Kari Baker’s death a suicide. Only this week did Judge Martin, following an inquest, change his ruling in the death from suicide to undetermined.

Toombs acknowledged Friday that much of the new evidence that led to his seeking the arrest warrant came from the investigative efforts of Cawthon and the Dulins’ civil litigation team, headed by Waco attorney Bill Johnston, a former federal prosecutor.

“We appreciate the work of the Rangers and others that resulted in this arrest and we also appreciate Judge Martin’s cooperation in the inquest and today,” Johnston said.

Dickey said she doubted that her friend committed suicide because “of our conversations about family and her spiritual life.”

She said they talked of their children and the upcoming school year, adding that Baker had interviewed for a new job a short time before her death and was eager to face a new challenge.

“She was always looking forward,” Dickey said. “She was charged up about the possibility of a new job teaching language arts at the middle school because she just had a passion for writing and she wanted to go to the next level.”

Toombs’ arrest complaint alleges that phone records indicated that Matt Baker called another woman on “dozens of occasions” between January and March 2006, adding that they were seen shopping for engagement rings within days of Kari Baker’s death.

An inspection of Matt Baker’s computer at the Waco Center for Youth showed that he had viewed Internet sites about drug overdoses with prescription drugs. On March 9, 2006, Baker conducted a computer search for “overdose by sleeping pill,” according to the sworn statement.

Baker also visited other Internet sites such as “SecureRXCart,” which authorities believe he used to buy prescription medication.

After Kari Baker confronted her husband about finding crushed pills in his briefcase, the affidavit alleges Matt Baker told her that youths from the Waco Center for Youth must have put them in his briefcase. Matt Baker reportedly told police investigators later that his wife must have hidden the pills there, police allege.

Other allegations included in the complaint revealed there was an abrasion on Kari Baker’s nose and bruises on her lips, possibly indicating that a pillow or other object was placed over her face to suffocate her.

Evidence reviewed

Also, forensic experts from Tennessee and Oklahoma, who have been hired by the Dulins to review evidence for their civil lawsuit, agree the timeline Matt Baker gave for his activities the night he discovered his wife’s body are contradicted by physical evidence, including lividity, or the time it takes for blood to pool in the lower extremities of a dead body.

Besides Dickey, Kari Baker reportedly told a counselor in April 2006 that she thought Baker was having an affair and that she believed he was going to kill her after she found the pills in his briefcase, according to the affidavit.

Investigators also learned that Baker reportedly switched computers with his secretary at the Waco Center For Youth when he learned police had a warrant to inspect the one he had been using.

“The defendant even switched inventory labels on the computers in an effort to disguise the computer switch,” Toombs alleged in the complaint.

Later, the computer in his secretary’s office “went missing” on a state holiday when the offices were closed.

One employee at work that day remembered seeing Baker in the office area, the report states.

L S D - lysergic acid diethylamide

LSD will turn 70 next year. What is LSD? It's lysergic acid diethylamide. It was invented at Sandoz Laboratories in 1938 by a research chemist named Albert Hoffman (who just turned 100 last year). Hoffman was working with a rye fungus called ergot, looking for nothing more than a headache remedy. It wasn't until five years later, 1943, that Hoffman began to suspect the mind altering qualities of LSD by accidental ingestion. He then took a deliberate dosage of 250 micrograms to verify his suspicion. That was an enormous dose by current standards -- 25 micrograms is the "norm". LSD is very potent. Hoffman then took a famous bicycle ride in which he hallucinated that trees were melting. The next day, he awoke with a sense of expanded awareness and credited LSD with his newfound wisdom.

LSD quickly garnered attention for its mind-bending effects. Sandoz gave it freely to doctors studying schizophrenia (among others) and gave it the commercial name Delysid. As it grew in popularity, some doctors actually prescribed it for depression and anxiety. In 1961, Harvard psychology professor Timothy Leary received an LSD study grant. In one of his studies, he found that 83% of LSD users had profound, beautiful insights from their drug use. LSD became the "super muse" of the art and music community. Aldous Huxley, Allen Ginsberg and Anais Nin were among its users. People claimed to feel visionary and born again under its influence. The Beatles, the Doors and the Grateful Dead were among the multitude of musicians that turned on and tuned in. Oddly, some of the most beautiful music of the 20th century ("A Day in the Life", "Tuesday Afternoon") was probably LSD-influenced.

Alas, nothing good is forever. There had to be some kind of bummer to bring everyone back down and there was. LSD caused "bad trips" where people would experience pain or ghastly imagery. It was thought to cause permanent psychosis in some users and traumatic flashbacks in others. For these reasons, it was banned in the USA in October 1966. LSD took some other bad raps at about the same time. Both the Army and the CIA had been using LSD for mind control experiments (eg, Project MKULTRA). The subjects of the experiment were soldiers and citizens unaware that they were being used as guinea pigs. Such experiments were outlawed under the Ford Administration and laws of informed consent were later enacted.

And so, what is the status of LSD today? It is alive and well in the underground recreational drug market. It's frequently dispensed on blotter paper in tiny dosages of 20 to 30 micrograms. In 2006, the British Journal of Psychiatry actually suggested that LSD might be reevaluated for its medical use. Maybe after the passage of 40 years and the reduced hysteria, the drug could be tested in a more controlled fashion. I can't imagine what illness I might have, where the antidote gives me melting trees and time dilation. But what the hey -- I've had some killer head aches. What harm is a Salvador Dali world, if I can feel good again? But maybe we should refrain.

Speaking of refrains, I'm thinking of, "I read the news today Oh boy ...” LSD gave us some bad trips and some really good music. What to make of something that has such powers? The genie needs to stay in the bottle for now. When Sandoz comes out with a version that only makes us visionary or only sends us on a good trip -- then maybe we can let the genie back out of the bottle.

Suit filed against God

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - The defendant in a state senator's lawsuit is accused of causing untold death and horror and threatening to cause more still. He can be sued in Douglas County, the legislator claims, because He's everywhere.

State Sen. Ernie Chambers sued God last week. Angered by another lawsuit he considers frivolous, Chambers says he's trying to make the point that anybody can file a lawsuit against anybody.

Chambers says in his lawsuit that God has made terroristic threats against the senator and his constituents, inspired fear and caused "widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth's inhabitants."

The Omaha senator, who skips morning prayers during the legislative session and often criticizes Christians, also says God has caused "fearsome floods ... horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes."

He's seeking a permanent injunction against the Almighty.

Chambers said the lawsuit was triggered by a federal suit filed against a judge who recently barred words such as "rape" and "victim" from a sexual assault trial.

The accuser in the criminal case, Tory Bowen, sued Lancaster District Judge Jeffre Cheuvront, claiming that he violated her free speech rights.

Chambers said Bowen's lawsuit is inappropriate because the Nebraska Supreme Court has already considered the case and federal courts follow the decisions of state supreme courts on state matters.

"This lawsuit having been filed and being of such questionable merit creates a circumstance where my lawsuit is appropriately filed," Chambers said. "People might call it frivolous but if they read it they'll see there are very serious issues I have raised."

U.S. District Judge Richard Kopf, in an order last week, expressed doubts about whether Bowen's lawsuit "has any legal basis whatsoever" and said sanctions may be imposed against Bowen and her attorneys if they fail to show cause for the lawsuit.

The Associated Press usually does not identify accusers in sex-assault cases, but Bowen has allowed her name to be used publicly because of the issue over the judge's language restrictions.

Cheuvront declared a mistrial in the sexual assault trial in July, saying pretrial publicity made it impossible to gather enough impartial jurors.

Principal of catholic school arrested

HARLAN -- SCCS Principal Louis J. Stroschein, Jr., 31, Harlan, was arrested Friday, Sept. 14 by the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office for allegedly attempting to meet a female age 16 or under at a motel for the purpose of engaging in a sex act.

Stroschein was arrested Friday by the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office assigned to Iowa's Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce.

Reports said Stroschein was charged in Black Hawk County with enticing away a minor. Stroschein is the principal at the Shelby County Catholic School, a position he has held for a little more than a year. He is in his second year as the school's principal and oversees approximately 130-140 students in grades Pre-K through 8th grade.

Stroschein came to Harlan from Dubuque where he was principal at St. Anthony Catholic Elementary School. He is married and has two children.

Authorities allege Stroschein engaged in an internet chat with a female he knew to be age 16 or under and arranged to travel to Waterloo in Black Hawk County to meet with her and take her to a motel for the purpose of engaging in a sex act with her.

Stroschein was taken into custody when he arrived at the location in Black Hawk County.

He was being held on $100,000 bond at the Black Hawk County Jail today.

Search warrants served

Harlan Police Chief Frank Clark said Sunday that on behalf of Black Hawk County, officers served a search warrant at Stroschein's 1421 Garfield Ave. home at about 5:30 p.m. Friday. Confiscated from the home were computers and computer equipment.

In addition, a search warrant was served at the Shelby County Catholic School at about 9 p.m. Friday. School officials were called away from the HCHS vs. Glenwood football game at Merrill Field to open up the school.

A computer, DVDs and a VCR tape were taken as evidence.

All evidence was logged and is being transferred to the Black Hawk County Sheriff's Office, officials said.

Not permitted on campus

The local SCCS Board of Education plans to meet within a week to officially discuss Stroschein's arrest, but in the meantime has released a statement from the Des Moines Diocese which read, "The school board will address putting Mr. Stroschein on leave pending the results of the judicial process.

"He is not permitted on the campus of Shelby County Catholic School until the matter is resolved."

Sue Assmann will serve as administrator in the interim.

The Rev. Bob Hoefler, pastor at St. Michael's Church and a canonical administrator of the school, said an all-staff meeting was held Sunday to discuss the situation, and everyone agreed that there were no red flags that would have indicated anything such as this was occurring.

"Nobody noticed anything," Hoefler said. "There was no evidence that anything inappropriate was going on. It was all on the internet."

Hoefler said students were always safe and continue to be safe at the Catholic school. He's grateful that through discussions with staff on Sunday that there was unanimous comment that there was no hint of anything inappropriate had occurred at school.

Hoefler said Stroschein was an excellent principal.

Yet, the diocese is urging anyone with concerns about Stroschein and any students to call police.

As normal as possible school day

When school opened Monday morning, Hoefler said the school day was to begin as it always did on Monday with an opening prayer service. "We want to have life go on as normal as possible in the school," he said.

Age-appropriate discussions were to be held, however, as middle school students were to be told of the principal's arrest. "They need to know," said Hoefler.

At Sunday's staff meeting, Hoefler said teachers couldn't help but question what could motivate Stroschein to set up the alleged meeting with an underage female.

"It took 3 1/2 hours to drive up to Waterloo," Hoefler said. "What could he have been thinking?" during that drive. "We just couldn't understand. How could this be?"

If convicted of the class D felony charge against him, Stroschein faces a maximum penalty of five years in jail with additional fines totaling $5,000. He also could be required to register as a sex offender.

Pastor molests two girls

09/16/2007 - Accusations of child sexual abuse rocked a Fresno church earlier this week. For the first time since the allegations came to light the church congregation met for Sunday services with a message of faith for church members.

Church leaders say they are praying for his family, trying to heal, and focusing on faith.

An interim pastor took over the 10:30 Sunday service at the Sierra Heights Baptist Church, usually presided over by Pastor John "Jeb" Bonine. Glen Paden encouraged the congregation to turn to God during this difficult time when many are questioning why.

"The congregation sets a very high standard for pastor, for a spiritual leader, when those are broken, when they fail, when they fall, there is remorse, there is disappointment," says Pastor Paden.

Bonine, a 43 year old married father of eight, was arrested at his home Monday accused of sexually abusing two girls under the age of 14 who were not members of his church.

Church leaders say they are working with a counselor and would address the youth ministry about the situation and encourage parents to talk with their children. Mansel Trimble, Sierra Heights Pastor, says "We just maintain that God is in control, and God provides our strength, our power, our comfort and our direction. As people, we fail and stumble, but God does not."

Melody Valdez has attended this church since she was little and was surprised by the serious allegations. "Anything's possible, but we're just praying and hoping that the allegations are not true. He's a good pastor, and from what I've seen, he was a really good father, to me I don't think that's him," says Valdez.

Bonine is still an employee and the church will wait until the justice system unveils the outcome. "At this time, these are allegations and charges, so it would be premature to discharge him, not knowing all the facts, and where this is going," says Trimble.

Church pastors passed along their own message to the congregation Sunday. "This church is bigger than any leader whoever comes, and it will survive this crisis or whatever may come. Because the church is not the people's church, the church belongs to God, preached Pastor Paden.

Bonine is being held at the Fresno County jail without bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, September 27th.

Pastor's son arrested

LAS CRUCES — A Las Cruces man was arrested Thursday for allegedly having sex with a 12-year-old girl and offering her gifts, including a trip to Disneyland, if she did not tell anyone about the relationship.

The man, according to court records, is the son of a pastor at a local church.

Rico Dominic Escudero, 28, of the 1300 block of Brownlee Avenue was arrested Thursday by Rio Arriba County Sheriff's deputies and charged with one count of second-degree criminal sexual contact and two counts of first-degree sexual penetration.

The alleged relationship took place in Las Cruces. Police spokesman Dan Trujillo said it was unclear why Escudero was in Rio Arriba County when he was apprehended.

Escudero was being held Friday in Rio Arriba awaiting extradition back to Las Cruces.

According to the statement of facts filed in Dona Ana County Magistrate Court, the alleged victim and her mother had been staying at the Victory Outreach Church women's home.

The documents state Escudero is the son of the pastor of the church, located on Valley Drive. A message left at the church was not immediately returned Friday. A working telephone listing for the pastor on the church's Web site could not be located.

The document's state that during a four-day period in mid-June, the 12-year-old stayed at Escudero's home where he asked her about her sexual history and proceeded to grab and kiss her when she was in the bathroom.

The girl claimed that on another occassion, she was allegedly ordered by Escudero to get on the living room floor and he had sex with her.

The girl also reported that in late July, Escudero exposed himself and asked her to perform a sex act.

Court documents state Escudero offered the girl a cell phone and tickets to Disneyland if she did not talk about the alleged encounters. The documents also state that Escudero is married and has a 4-year-old child.

A search of court records found no other criminal history for Escudero in New Mexico.

Pastor arrested on child molestation charge

FRESNO, Calif.—The pastor of Sierra Heights Baptist Church was arrested on felony child molestation charges, according to police.

Jail records showed John Bonine, 43, was arrested Monday and was still being held in Fresno County Jail Wednesday night as the congregation met to organize a leadership team to deal with the issue. The charges involve two children, both female, who were allegedly molested over several years.

Mansel Trimble, youth pastor at Sierra Heights, met with church members Wednesday to discuss what he called a "difficult and painful" episode for the church and for Bonine's family.

"We are looking for any way that we can be supportive to our pastor's family," he said. "We also recognize that our congregation is a victim."

Bonine's bail is set at $500,000 dollars

Church believes pastors lies

Members of a local church whose former part-time pastor has been arrested on child pornography charges don’t think he meant to do anything wrong, the church’s full-time preacher says.

Henry Edgington, 63, stepped down from his leadership position at Elm Mott Church of Christ before his arrest Thursday, says Sam Armstrong, the church’s main pastor. Although Edgington maintains — and some church members believe — that he had the graphic images because he was doing research to try and get child pornography sites off the Internet, he decided to quit his post the past week or so because he feared he might be charged with a crime, Armstrong said.

Those fears played out this week when Edgington was arrested on seven counts of possessing child pornography. According to affidavits supporting his arrest, he had multiple illegal pictures of children in a padlocked box at his home. They were found and brought to police by the fiancée of Edgington’s son. She found the box in his bathroom, the affidavits say.

Such circumstances might seem damning to people who don’t know Edgington, Armstrong said. But he and the other 60 people who attend the church fully believe Edgington’s claims, he said. For one thing, Edgington is a spiritual person and a family man, with three children and several grandchildren, he said.

Plus, Edgington had talked about his project long before the pictures were turned over to police, Armstrong said. About six months to a year ago, Edgington told him he was contacting a group from Florida that works to get child pornography off the Internet, he said.

One of the group’s strategies, Edgington told Armstrong, was to involve legislators in the fight. His plan, Armstrong said, was to eventually turn the information he gathered over to U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards, D-Waco.

A spokesman for Edwards’ office, however, said it has not received any communication from Edgington.

Armstrong concedes Edgington may have violated the letter of the law. But in his defense, he said Edgington never expected anyone to go through the materials, which Armstrong was told were in the lockbox in a closet.

Asked about Edgington’s son’s fiancée, Armstrong said he didn’t want to comment much on the woman. But he did say she has behaved strangely at times.

“It’s just a real tragedy,” Armstrong said. “He was kind of like one man against the world. He was just trying to get something done.”

The Tribune-Herald found Edgington, who was released from jail on $70,000 bond, at his home Friday. He declined an interview but did make a few comments.

“My side of the story will come out,” he said, adding that knowing that some people think he is a pedophile is a horrible feeling.

Asked about the group in Florida, Edgington said it is not an official organization but rather a network of child advocates, including ministers. The approach they have used has worked in Florida, he said.

Edgington said he has been in the ministry for 37 years and that for 35 of those years he was a state prison chaplain. A prison system spokesman said he couldn’t find any record of Edgington being employed as a chaplain. But it’s possible he has volunteered as one, the spokesman said.

Scott Holt, the Waco police detective working the case, said Edgington mentioned being a chaplain during his interview with police. However, Holt said he hasn’t been able to verify that information.

What police do know, Holt said, is that Edgington was also working part time at the Czech Inn of West. That’s where he accessed the illegal images. Edgington doesn’t have a computer at his home, he said.

Holt said he doesn’t know the circumstances of how Edgington’s future daughter-in-law came to find the box. Police only got involved after she showed up at the police department and handed the box over to officers, he said.

This is the first time Holt has ever dealt with a situation like this, he said. Occasionally someone will call the police department after stumbling across what appears to be child pornography. But he has never heard from anyone claiming to have done an investigation on his own.

Holt said it’s difficult to know what to make of Edgington’s claims. Edgington produced a magazine article about a group in Florida that is trying to combat child exploitation, but Holt said he doesn’t know the details of what that group does.

State laws do differ on child pornography, Holt said. But he said he doubts any group, in Florida or elsewhere, is doing what Edgington claims to have done because federal statutes prohibit it.

“The federal law is the same everywhere and possession is possession,” Holt said.

The detective said that while some people might think Edgington was doing a heroic thing, the truth is that every time he accessed an illegal image, he was exploiting the child pictured in it.

“He believes his heart was in the right place, but that was not a defense,” Holt said. “He decided to play police and it was a mistake.”

Under the law, the only people who can legally access child pornography are licensed peace officers investigating a case involving the images, Holt said. Members of the public who come across what they believe to be illegal pictures should contact their local law enforcement department, he said.

Donna Holdbrook, general manager of the Czech Inn, said no one at the hotel knew what Edgington was doing on the computers there. He has not been to work since late August, when he asked for time off so he could spend more time with his church, she said.

Life after death

"The diverse religious stories do agree on one thing: survival [after death]. They differ merely on the details. So aren't they good evidence for survival? No. Agreement in this case merely shows that a common theme can be found in almost all the world's religions. Psychology can easily explain this common theme... People fear death. They fear it not just here and there, or once in a while, but everywhere and always. Fearing death, people have a strong motive to deny it... The explanation in terms of human psychology is not only simpler, it is testable. The explanation in terms of survival, on the other hand, is speculative at best, more complex, and impossible to test either directly or indirectly. Thus believing in survival on the basis of religious stories isn't belief based on good evidence. It is belief based on faith. And it is based not just on faith, but on faith that goes contrary to the best available evidence."

Pastor Arrested on several sexual assaults

The pastor of an eastern Kanawha County church was arrested Monday morning on charges of sexually assaulting at least three boys more than a decade ago.

Shrewsbury Church of God senior pastor Sandy Martin Cook, 48, of Belle, faces three counts of sexual assault by a person of trust, said Trooper E.B. McClung of the State Police's South Charleston detachment.

At least one of the alleged victims was assaulted on several occasions in 1994 when he was a member of the church, which is located on U.S. 60 east of Charleston, McClung said.

"They're all grown men now, but these allegations happened when [the victims] were between ages 12 and 17," McClung said. "They alleged that the sexual contact either occurred at [Cook's] home or in his vehicle at various spots along [U.S.] route 60."

Police believe Cook was involved in acts of masturbation, as well as oral and anal sex with the boys, according to a criminal complaint filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

In 1994, one of the boy's parents found out about Cook's alleged conduct and reported it to the church, states the complaint. A meeting was held at a church in Chesapeake, but the allegations were withdrawn and authorities were not notified, according to the complaint.

Investigators believe there are more victims, McClung said. If anyone has more information, they should contact the State Police's South Charleston detachment at 558-7777.

Cook is also charged with 44 counts of third-degree sexual assault.

He was being held Monday night at South Central Regional Jail. Kanawha County Magistrate Joe Shelton set Cook's bond at $150,000 during a video arraignment Monday night.

"I'm just scared to death. Can I ask my wife how's my mother?" Cook said from the jail when asked if he had any questions.

Churchgoer Arrested on Child Porn

CAPE CORAL: A man has been excommunicated from his church, fired from his job, and now he is behind bars on child pornography charges. Police say he had downloaded hundreds of files onto his work computer.

Timothy Byerly's former boss, Jesse Goodwin, said he feels like he has had a rug pulled out from underneath him.

"I've never had anything confuse me so much in my life," said Goodwin. "I was looking for some pictures of stair work on my computer and stumbled upon it."

What he stumbled upon was child pornography - lots of it.

"I was disgusted and upset and worried. I called my attorney and didn't know what to do with it, didn't have any idea who had done it," said Goodwin.

But officers with the Cape Coral Police Department say it was 60-year-old Timothy Byerly who did it.

Goodwin described him as a family man and model employee who had worked for him for more than two years at his stair construction company.

"Tim was my top man in the shop. He was always here, always on time," said Goodwin.

According to police reports, Byerly was in fact spending a lot of extra time at work - not building stairs, but downloading hundreds of child porn images and taking them home to look at.

Goodwin turned his computer over to police, who say they found more than 600 pictures of child pornography on the hard drive.

"I feel betrayed. I trusted him. He had a key to my shop. He could come and go at will," said Goodwin. "I feel sorry for Tim because he's such a fine man in many ways. But there is something sick."

Police reports do show that Byerly sought counseling for child porn addiction from his pastor at the North Fort Myers Presbyterian Church. It states Byerly admitted to a history of viewing child porn at work and that he was even kicked out of his own home when the child porn was found on the work computer.

The report also revealed he confessed to his pastor about being fired from a teaching position in Georgia back in 2001 - again for viewing child porn on a work computer.

"I just never ever would have suspected him," said Goodwin.

Police say Byerly was not charged for looking at child pornography in Georgia.

But he is now in the Lee County Jail on two felony charges for computer pornography and possessing material involving the sexual performance of a child.

Pastor was abuse victim

NEW: A spokesman for the Church of God's international offices in Cleveland, Tennessee, says Cook has been placed on administrative leave.

A high-profile pastor from Kanawha County says he's one of the sexual assault victims of another pastor -- and he's written a letter to the public.

Pastor Mike Lewis of the New Life Center in Cedar Grove sent a letter to local media outlets Tuesday night. In the letter, he says he was one of the victims of Sandy Martin Cook more than ten years ago when he was a teenager.

Cook was and still is the pastor at the Shrewsbury Church of God.

Cook was arrested by West Virginia State Police on Monday. He's charged with 3 counts of sexual abuse by a person of trust, and 44 counts of sexual assault in the 3rd degree.

During his arraignment in Kanawha County magistrate court, Cook said, "I'm scared to death."

According to the criminal complaint, the alleged crimes happened around 1994 -- and so far, three alleged victims have come forward in the case. All were between 13-16 years old at the time.

One victim stated he developed a close relationship with Cook -- and that Cook told him it was "normal for father figures to perform/receive sexual acts on each other and that the performing of such acts was part of growing up."

Another victim told police Cook performed sexual acts on him during two sleepovers at Cook's house, according to the criminal complaint. That victim told his parents, who reported the matter to the church; but the matter was later withdrawn during a meeting at church in Chesapeake "for conflicting reasons" and was not reported to police at the time.

A trooper verified the victim's statement about the meeting and the fact that the issue was withdrawn.

Investigators say the suspect's actions are similar in each case.

"Each of the 3 victims live separate lives and one lives in another state," as stated in the criminal complaint. "However, each of their allegations provide details of the intricacies of Cook's conduct that are exactly the same."

Police say they first learned of this case when one of the alleged victims came forward on August 3. According to investigators, the first person led them to Mike Lewis, and he led to the third victim in the case.

The criminal complaint states that a majority of the alleged crimes happened either at Cook's home in Belle, or in one of Cook's cars.

Cook is currently out of jail on $150,000 bond. WSAZ has also learned that he works full-time as the head at the the cardiac cath lab at Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) Memorial Hospital.

State Police say more victims may be out there. They urge you to come forward if you have any more information in this case. Trooper M.J. Napier is handling the investigation: (304) 558-7778.

Top Ten Signs You're a Fundamentalist Christian

10 - You vigorously deny the existence of thousands of gods claimed by other religions, but feel outraged when someone denies the existence of yours.

9 - You feel insulted and "dehumanized" when scientists say that people evolved from other life forms, but you have no problem with the Biblical claim that we were created from dirt.

8 - You laugh at polytheists, but you have no problem believing in a Triune God.

7 - Your face turns purple when you hear of the "atrocities" attributed to Allah, but you don't even flinch when hearing about how God/Jehovah slaughtered all the babies of Egypt in "Exodus" and ordered the elimination of entire ethnic groups in "Joshua" including women, children, and trees!

6 - You laugh at Hindu beliefs that deify humans, and Greek claims about gods sleeping with women, but you have no problem believing that the Holy Spirit impregnated Mary, who then gave birth to a man-god who got killed, came back to life and then ascended into the sky.

5 - You are willing to spend your life looking for little loopholes in the scientifically established age of Earth (few billion years), but you find nothing wrong with believing dates recorded by Bronze Age tribesmen sitting in their tents and guessing that Earth is a few generations old.

4 - You believe that the entire population of this planet with the exception of those who share your beliefs -- though excluding those in all rival sects - will spend Eternity in an infinite Hell of Suffering. And yet consider your religion the most "tolerant" and "loving."

3 - While modern science, history, geology, biology, and physics have failed to convince you otherwise, some idiot rolling around on the floor speaking in "tongues" may be all the evidence you need to "prove" Christianity.

2 - You define 0.01% as a "high success rate" when it comes to answered prayers. You consider that to be evidence that prayer works. And you think that the remaining 99.99% FAILURE was simply the will of God.

1 - You actually know a lot less than many atheists and agnostics do about the Bible, Christianity, and church history - but still call yourself a Christian.

How do Christians do it?

I have been wondering lately how Xtians can lead double lives. How do they live with themselves? As you see by my postings that pastors seem to have the ability to preach against gays and abortion Sunday mornings, then in the evening they go molest some 11 year old girl. Then they are back the following Sunday preaching against sin.

I only post the pastors most of the time. My email overflows with perverts that are Xtian and commit acts against children women and men.

I read a study recently by psychologist Harper and Marx, " Motivational Dynamics of Childhood Sexual Abuse" 2004, that mentioned that children are 2 to 4 times more likely to be molested by a conservative Xtian friend or family member than by a stranger.

I sure would keep my kids away from Xtians to protect them.
