Former youth pastor arrested on child porn charges

OSTEEN -- A former youth pastor who once lived in Deltona has been arrested on charges he possessed and distributed child pornography, a Volusia County Sheriff's Office spokesman today.

Joel Price, 36, was indicted in federal court and arrested earlier this month on two counts of distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.

Price first came under suspicion in April, when a Martin County Sheriff’s investigator, who also is a member of the Internet Crimes Against Children task force, discovered child pornography being openly shared over the Internet. After tracing the host computer to a home in Deltona, the investigation was turned over to a joint child exploitation task force representing the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Investigators got a search warrant and seized computer equipment from a home on Balsam Street in Deltona, where Price was living at the time. A forensic examination of the equipment turned up more than 6,000 pictures and approximately 250 video clips depicting children engaged in sexual activity, the spokesman said.

Investigators said they believe Price downloaded the photos and movies from Internet and did not have sexual contact with any children. The Sheriff's Office spokesman said Price, the former youth pastor with the New Tribes Mission in Sanford, admitted to being obsessed with child pornography.

The investigation produced a federal indictment against Price and he was arrested Dec. 18 at his new home on Cracker Avenue in Osteen. He was transported to the Federal Courthouse in Orlando, where his bail was set at $50,000.

Another former employee of the New Tribes Mission, George Allen Goolde of Orange City, was convicted of two counts of lewd and lascivious molestation in August 2007 and sentenced to 50 years in jail. Goolde and his wife had served as foster parents until his arrest in August 2003. He was accused of molesting some of the the children in his care.

Youth Pastor Accused of Sexual Relationship with Teen

A Capo Beach youth pastor was arrested today on suspicion of sexual involvement with a minor.

The suspect, 28-year-old Daniel Pedroza, is a junior high school ministry pastor at Capo Beach Calvary Church in Dana Point. He is a resident of the city. His arrest followed a child abuse report authorities received from social services. The report claimed a female minor—somewhere between 14 and 17—had become sexually involved with her youth pastor, said Orange County Sheriff’s Department Spokesman Jim Amormino. He said the victim met Pedroza when she was in junior high, and that she had known him for a little while before the report was filed.

Pedroza is accused of six felony counts, including three counts of unlawful sex with a minor. No official charges have been filed by the district attorney’s office. Pedroza is in custody and is being held on $100,000 bail.

Officials at the church where Pedroza is employed have reportedly been cooperating with authorities.

Chicago archdiocese to pay $1.2M in sex case

A teenage boy and his mother will receive $1.2 million from the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago for sexual abuse the boy suffered at the hands of Daniel McCormack, a lawyer for the victims said today.

The agreement is the most recent settlement reached between the archdiocese and a victim of McCormack, the former pastor of St. Agatha Catholic Church, who pleaded guilty last year to fondling five boys ages 8 to 12 at St. Agatha. The victim in this settlement, however, was not part of the criminal case, lawyer Kenneth Cunniff said.

According to the complaint, McCormack made advances toward the boy, then 14, once in August 2005 in public during a White Sox game at U.S. Cellular Field. He also made advances in the church rectory and at the Our Lady of the West Side School, Presentation campus, where McCormack coached him in basketball.

The boy and his younger brother, who was repeatedly abused by McCormack, told their mother about the misconduct when the priest was arrested and removed from the parish in January 2006.

In May, Cardinal Francis George released a legal deposition that disclosed the steps and missteps that led to McCormack's tenure at St. Agatha years after initial allegations of misconduct surfaced during his seminary days in 1988. According to the document, as many as 23 people have alleged abuse by McCormack, who is serving a 5-year prison sentence for five felony counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Church elder gets jail for molesting girl

A former Abington church elder will do jail time for having multiple improper sexual contacts with a 13-year-old girl he was mentoring.

Norman Brooks, 61, of Roslyn, was sentenced to three to 23 months in Montgomery County Prison, which he will start serving on Jan. 2, and a five-year probationary sentence.

Brooks, who held numerous volunteer positions at Carmel Presbyterian Church including youth group leader, also was fined $1,000, directed to undergo and complete any psychiatric treatment recommended by the probation department and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service.

In addition, Brooks was ordered to have no contact with the girl, her family, youth groups or the church.

“This young lady was betrayed by the trust she and her family placed in you and by your actions, which were more than reprehensible,” Judge Thomas C. Branca told Brooks. “This young lady will be dealing with the impact of your crimes for a long time.”

Claiming he was “filled with remorse,” Brooks apologized to the girl and her family, who were not present at the sentencing.

Brooks, who has no prior criminal history, said he did not know why he did it but that he was undergoing therapy to deal with the problem.

Since his arrest, Brooks said his wife has filed for divorce, kicking him out of the family home, he has lost his job at Abington Memorial Hospital and he voluntarily left Carmel Presbyterian Church and has had to find a new church.

County Assistant District Attorney Stephen Geday offered no sympathy for Brooks' plight, calling his crimes “jail worthy.”

“He was supposed to be the shepherd guarding the flock,” Geday told the judge. “Instead, he was the wolf in sheep's clothing.”

Brooks was arrested in May after the girl, whom Brooks was mentoring for confirmation into the church, reported to her mother and then police that Brooks had been inappropriately touching her over an approximate three-month period.

These acts included placing his hand on her thigh and giving her back rubs that extended down to her bare back where her shirt was raised above her slacks, according to court records.

This sexual touching took place at the church, in his car and in the girl's home even when her mother was present, court records said.

Brooks also allegedly tried to slip his hand between her thighs and caress the girl at a performance of “Jesus Christ Superstar” that was attended by the youth group.

Brooks pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of indecent assault, corruption of minors and endangering the welfare of a child for those offenses.

Defense attorney Michael Dunn, noting that his client's actions were “out of character,” had asked for a probationary sentence for Brooks.

Ex-scout leader charged in Thai sex ring

A former Calgarian accused of running a pedophilia business out of his Thailand home for at least eight years was arrested at a London airport Monday on his way back to Canada, a U. S. district attorney said Tuesday.

John Charles Wrenshall, 62, a man who was once convicted in 1997 for indecent assaults on choir boys at the Cathedral Church of the Redeemer in Calgary, had lived outside of Bangkok since 1999 or 2000 after moving from Calgary.

American prosecutor Lee Vartan said in a phone interview that Wrenshall was arrested on a warrant stemming from an indictment handed down last summer by a grand jury in New Jersey.

The arrest at Heathrow airport was the culmination of a joint investigation by American, Thai and Canadian authorities that has been going on for months.

Wrenshall is being held in the U. K. pending his extradition to the U. S.

The indictment, handed down Aug. 25, was unsealed following Wrenshall's arrest. He is charged with one count of conspiracy to engage in sex tourism and two counts of aiding and abetting sex tourism.

Wrenshall is also charged with one count of conspiracy to produce child pornography, seven counts of production of child pornography and seven counts of distribution of child pornography.

The indictment and accompanying court documents allege Wrenshall essentially acted as a pimp, arranging trips by U. S. sex tourists and others to his home in Thailand where they would pay to engage in sex with boys as young as six, sometimes for weeks at a time. It alleges Wrenshall's customers were allowed to videotape and photograph their abuse.

U. S. officials allege Wrenshall has been hosting sex tourists in this manner since at least May 2000.

While living in Thailand, Wrenshall worked at a language centre called the AUA Thailand Language Center, first as a teacher and then later as a supervisor.

Adul Pinsuvana, the centre's director, said Wrenshall resigned recently to return to Canada; his last day at the language centre was Friday. When Pinsuvana heard of the arrest, he couldn't believe it.

"I thought at first it was a joke or some-thing. When I saw the news report, I was shocked," said Pinsuvana.

Terry Fullerton, choir director at the Calgary cathedral from 1973 to 1995, said he hadn't heard from Wrenshall since asking him to leave the church in the 1980s because of allegations of sexual improprieties.

"I'm very disappointed that whatever treatment he had doesn't seem to do any good," said Fullerton.

If convicted, Wrenshall faces up to 15 years in prison for each count of sex tourism, a minimum of 10 years and a maximum of 20 years in prison for each count of producing child pornography, and up to 15 years in prison for distributing child pornography. He also faces a fine of up to $250,000 per count.

Canadian authorities confirmed they had heard about the charges, but could not say what role the government had in the investigation.

In 1997, Wrenshall was sentenced to a year in jail for indecently assaulting eight choir boys at a downtown Calgary church over more than three decades. The former scout master and senior choir member, then 51,was able to lure the boys to his home under the pretence that he was running a study on preteen boys' sexuality. During his trial, Wrenshall admitted that he also had molested at least a dozen other boys aged nine to 12. He was never charged in the latter incidents. He was also convicted in Canada of a similar offence in 1970.

Pastor charged with fondling 12-year-old

GARY -- Twice this summer, the pastor of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church fondled and groped a 12-year-old member of his congregation, telling her "he wanted her to be his ho," court records filed Monday state.

Marlon C. Mack, 35, formerly of Van Buren Baptist Church here and New Community Baptist Church in Hammond, was charged with two counts of child molesting and faces up to 28 years in prison if convicted of the charges.

Patrolman Reggie Woods and Detective LaRia Crews arrested Mack on Sunday during a traffic stop at 13th Avenue and Grant Street.

Crews obtained the charges after the victim told her about the two incidents.

The first time, the girl, who turned 12 in May, said she came out of the church restroom and Mack was there. "He grabbed her by the breasts and started rubbing her," the probable cause affidavit states.

A month later, in August, Mack "pulled her into the kitchen" and put his hand down her pants. Later, he showed her pornographic photos and said he was going to introduce her to an older woman who would teach her about sex.

Mack is being held at Lake County Jail in Crown Point.

The Post-Tribune left a message on the church's answering machine Monday seeking comment on the pastor's status, but no one returned the call.

The church is at 3634 W. 11th Ave.

St. Pete Deacon Says Of Charge He Fondled Teen Girl: 'False'

ST. PETERSBURG - Police have arrested a deacon they say inappropriately touched a teenage girl who attends his church.

Willie Clarence Harvard, 58, of St. Petersburg, was arrested Tuesday on a charge of simple battery, St. Petersburg Police Department spokesman George Kajtsa said. He is accused of fondling a 17-year-old girl through her clothing on Nov. 14.

Police are asking that anyone with similar complaints step forward.

"The investigation revealed similar types of inappropriate behavior by Harvard in the recent past, and for that reason we believe there may be other victims out there who have not reported it to the police," police spokesman Bill Proffitt said.

Today, Harvard denied the allegation.

"All those allegations our false," he said. "I don't want to hear nothing else about these allegations. We are going to fight this in court. That's all."

The Rev. Robert Ward, who is the pastor of the church at 3500 18th Ave. S., was dismayed by the allegation.

"When I first heard about it, I was very shocked and thought it was certainly unbelievable, because I have known Deacon Harvard for 21 years," Ward said. "I've never had something of that nature brought to our church concerning any of our spiritual leaders in the church, so I was quite surprised and quite shocked that such an allegation would be made."

Harvard has been a deacon at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church since it was founded 21 years ago.

Spiritual leader kills boy, 7, for witchcraft

Yaw Payni, a 52-year-old prophet of the Twelve Apostles Church at New Botianor near Accra has been arrested by the Weija Police Command over the death of a 7-year-old boy who was supposedly tortured severely and tied to a pawpaw tree on allegations of witchcraft.

The deceased, John Kweifio aka Johnny was among four children (three boys and a girl) who were taken to the church for spiritual cleansing by their parents due to their frequent ailments.

Three of the children, Hellen Adjei, 11, Francis Owusu, 9 and the younger brother of the deceased, Gideon Mensah, 5, were compelled to confess to practicing witchcraft even though they initially denied they were witches.

Johnny who insisted he was not a wizard remained tightly tied to the pawpaw tree in the compound, starved and whipped until he died.

After Johnny gave up the ghost, the pastor allegedly told his father, Joe Kweifio, that the boy was stricken by an angel of the Lord for his refusal to confess he was a wizard.

As he was tied to the tree, Johnny defecated and passed urine in his pants because he was not allowed to visit the toilet.

When the Weija Police was contacted on Wednesday December 3, 2008, the District Police Commander, DSP John Animpong confirmed the story.

He said on Monday December 1, 2008, a passerby voluntarily reported to his command that four children had been tied to some trees in the compound of the Twelve Apostles Church premises at New Botianor.

When his men got to the scene on Monday night, the survivors had barely been untied from the trees.

Whilst the police sought their freedom, the eldest amongst the three, Hellen, told the security agencies that one of them could not survive the three-week torture and his corpse had been thrown behind the wall.

Instantaneously, Panyi was arrested and taken round the walls of the church, where the police found the remains of Johnny lying in a weedy area.

Prophet Panyi was detained at the police station and was expected to appear before court yesterday.

Johnny’s body is being kept in the Police Hospital morgue awaiting autopsy.

Parents of the children including Johnny’s father were also arrested for interrogation and later granted police enquiry bail.

Love Valley pastor faces fraud charges

The pastor of a Love Valley area church faces 13 charges after authorities said he conned a church member into giving him money for real estate and a vehicle.

Jeffrey Lynn Lambert, 46, of Statesville is listed as the pastor of the Crossroads Gospel Church near Love Valley.

Lt. Stanley Watkins of the Iredell County Sheriff's Office charged Lam-bert with 12 counts of ob-taining property by false pretense and one count of felony conversion by bailee on Tuesday. His bond was set at $15,000.

Watkins said the case began when Edward Strelko, a disabled Vietnam veteran, filed a report with Detective Sgt. Allen Sipes of the fraud unit.

Strelko told Sipes he met Lambert at the church after Streklo began attending services there.

After several weeks, Strelko said, Lambert offered to sell him some property off N.C. Highway 115 after learning he was looking for property in that area.

Lambert, Strelko said, told him the property belonged to a family member and it could be purchased cheaply. He then told Streklo it needed to be surveyed and asked him to pay for those services, Sheriff Phil Redmond said.

Strelko said he was shown the property and noticed a real estate sign.

He questioned Lambert about the sign and Lambert said the Realtor wasn't able to sell the property, authorities said.

Sipes said Strelko was told by Lambert that a lawyer was needed, and he told him about a lawyer named Mary Snead.

Strelko gave Lambert money for the attorney. After not hearing anything, Strelko asked Lambert about the surveying and Lambert told him he fired two surveyors for not completing the work and a third was bitten by a copperhead snake while working, Sipes said.

On another occasion, knowing Strelko had an affinity for older cars, Lambert told him Snead was closing an estate for a client and he could purchase a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette, Sipes said.

Then Strelko said he received a call from someone saying she was Mary Snead. Eventually, they agreed on a price for the car, and the woman claiming to be Snead told Strelko to pay Lambert, who would in turn pay her, authorities said.

Sipes said Lambert then offered to get Strelko a mobile home for free, but he needed to pay to get the axles moved and for Snead to research the deed.

Strelko gave Lambert money for these transactions, and after several months of getting nothing but excuses from Lambert, Strelko went to the sheriff's office, Sipes said.

Redmond said the investigation revealed the land didn't belong to Lambert or anyone associated with him. Investigators could not locate the attorney either.

During this investigation, Redmond said, Roanne Fogle came forward and said she had a Toro riding mower she took to someone for repairs.

While the mower was at the repair shop, she decided to sell it and the repair shop owner took it to Lambert to sell.

Within a week, Redmond said, Lambert contacted Fogle and told her he wanted to purchase the mower himself.

He promised to pay by the end of July, and by September, had not paid her, Watkins said.

After a few more promises to pay, Fogle obtained civil paperwork, and Lambert was ordered to appear in civil court. Watkins said he did not appear and a judgment was issued against him in favor of Fogle, and she was told to report it to the sheriff's office as well.

As a result, Watkins obtained the warrants on Lambert, who was arrested Tuesday.

Lambert recently completed a probationary sentence for a forgery charge in Catawba County, according to N.C. Department of Corrections records.

Watkins said anyone who may have been victimized by Lambert can contact him at (704) 928-4685.
